Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is currently recognised as the gold-standard treatment for those with difficulties related to emotionally-unstable personality disorder (EUPD). However it can be helpful for anyone who has issues with the key areas it targets. DBT supports people by building mindfulness skills, increasing emotion regulation, building tolerance to difficult emotions, addressing relational difficulties, and managing self-destructive patterns of behaviour.
Traditionally, DBT is typically offered for a minimum of 12 months, however it is dependent on personal need. There is growing evidence that DBT can be effective for shorter periods.
Anyone entering into DBT Intensive is required to first complete "pre-treatment". This can be up to 4 hours of an in-depth assessment. We usually split this time into 4 x 1-hour sessions. During this time I will talk you through how the DBT model works, and let you know what to expect going forward. We will explore your current symptoms, your history, set goals and work out exactly what needs to change to get you there. We will bring elements of a typical DBT Intensive session into pre-treatment, so you feel confident of exactly what you are committing to. At the end of pre-treatment, we will come to a mutual decision whether you would like to go ahead with DBT Intensive. Please get in touch if you are unsure whether DBT Intensive might be for you. I offer a light-touch version of DBT (DBT Lite) should you find the therapy of interest, but do not feel you require DBT Intensive. DBT-lite does not require pre-treatment.
Sessions are usually weekly - there are groups you can attend to supplement your skill acquisition. Whilst not a requirement, it is extremely beneficial and I would highly recommend it.
I will ask that you record your targeted behaviours, urges, emotions, and DBT skill use daily and bring this to session every week.
We then break down the most destructive event that has happened that week in up to 15 minutes. We then find the most appropriate strategy and we will practice this in session.
You will also have access to live coaching calls from myself throughout treatment. Should you find yourself struggling with a difficult emotion or using a skill in your daily life, you may request a coaching call. We will spend up to 15 minutes on the phone where I will coach you in real time to help you manage your distress or situation. Please be aware this is not crisis support, but offers skills so that you are able to better cope now and in the future.
Sessions are by appointment only and can be out of usual business hours. However, I usually respond to queries Monday - Friday between 8am and 6pm, and on Saturdays between 10am - 4pm. I will usually get back to you in less than two working days.
